Why is it so important to know the billing address?

We often aren't clear on the terms that appear on invoices, and the billing address is a mystery to many.

Why is it so important to know the billing address?

The billing address is the information tied to a credit card that verifies the customer’s contact details and helps prevent potential fraud.

The address indicates either where you live or where you work. Both options are valid and can be used as the customer prefers. The only requirement is that it must match the address the credit card company has on file. This way, we can tell whether or not we are dealing with fraud.

In the case of companies, the business address and the billing address must be the same, except in exceptional circumstances.

And what is it for?

Its main purpose is to prevent fraud and confirm that the card has been authorized. Its uses may include:

  • Allowing companies to contact the customer and send them their monthly charges.
  • Helping the seller obtain and verify the customer’s information legally. Some sellers apply high security levels to confirm customers’ identities.

What information does it include?

You need to make sure the details in the billing address match those on the bank’s records. These details include: the street where you live and its number, the floor number and postal code, plus the name of your town or city.

Exceptional cases

People who use anonymous cards do not include personal information on the card (their real name, date of birth, etc.). If we find ourselves in this situation, the simplest option is to ship the order by mail. This way, the customer’s personal information is not required, as it would be for home delivery.

If you want to receive orders at an address different from the one assigned to the card, the billing address field on the invoice must match the card, but the shipping address can be another address where the purchase will arrive.

Difference between billing address and home address

The difference between a home address and a billing address is that the former is where you live, while the latter is the address to which the credit card invoices are sent.
